PREVALENCE OF ANTIBODIES ANTI-BARTONELLA HENSELAEIN WESTERN SICILY: CHILDREN, BLOOD DONORS, AND CATS

To evaluate seroprevalence of B. henselae infection both in Sicilian children and healthy blood donors. Furthermore, circulation of Bartonella in the natural reservoir was also studied. Two hundred forty-three children, living in Sicily (Palermo), affected by various diseases, without clinical features suggesting B. henselae infection, together with 122 healthy blood donors were serologically investigated for IgG and IgM antibodies by indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT). One hundred twenty stray and 62 pet cats were also analyzed only for IgG. Background The oral cavity has been frequently described as the only site of involvement or as the first manifestation of mucous membrane pemphigoid (MMP), being the gingival tissues often involved, but usually this has been effusively detailed in limited case series. Liver biopsies of patients with inflammatory liver diseases and clinically healthy HBsAg-carriers were examined for presence of intracellular HBsAg, HBcAg and IgG by direct immunofluorescence. The studies revealed the following results: 1. In most cases healthy HBsAg-carriers had HBsAg in the cytoplasm, but they did never show HBcAg in the nuclei of hepatocytes. 2. In the early phase some patients with HBsAg-positive acute hepatitis had HBcAg and/or HBsAg in their hepatocytes. In a normal course with complete recovery the immunoelimination may clear either phenomenon at variable stages of the disease. 3. CLINICAL AND LABORATORY FINDINGS OF BOUTONNEUSE FEVER IN SICILIAN CHILDREN

The spectrum of signs and symptoms of 645 consecutive children diagnosed from 1984 to 1996 with boutonneuse fever (BF), a mild rickettsial disease caused by Rickettsia conorii endemic in the Mediterranean basin, are reported. The major clinical features were fever (97.2%), exanthema (96.1%) and “tache noire” (71.8%). The large series examined permitted the authors to observe some rare or disregarded clinical features of the disease: cases with papulovesicular exanthema, reported previously only in adults who had been infected by R. conorii in Africa; and cases in which the only symptom was an isolated lymphadenopathy. Summary Background: No consistent data are available on the currently employed diagnostic tools for autoimmune bullous diseases in Germany. The aim of this survey was to describe currently performed diagnostic methods for bullous autoimmune diseases in German dermatology departments. 7-O-acetyl-GD3 in human T-lymphocytes is detected by a specific T-cell-activating monoclonal antibody.

The monoclonal antibody U5, which is a potent inducer of proliferation in human T-cells, was found to bind to an alkali-sensitive derivative of ganglioside GD3. Using immunochemical and spectroscopic methods, the structure of the U5 antigen was determined as 7-O-acetyl-GD3. The antibody U5 did not react with 9-O-acetyl-GD3 and bound severalfold more stronger to 7-O-acetyl-GD3 than to GD3. U5 is the first antibody known to detect preferentially 7-O-acetyl-GD3. Flow cytometric analysis showed that each major class of human leukocytes contained a significant fraction of cells binding the U5 antibody.
